Testing for Varroa Mites in Your Hives
Many of you are probably aware that various methods exist to test for Varroa mites in your colonies. Aside from practicing excellent observation throughout the season, there are a few other methods employed today that the bee hobbyist can perform. The most common methods that have been utilized for several years include: Ether/Alcohol roll, powdered sugar “shake” method, Drone Brood sampling, and Sticky Board sampling.
As far as efficiency is concerned, every beekeeper tends to have a preferred method. The best advice is to consult with beekeepers in your area and see what the common protocols used by them have been as well as reach out to the State Association.
