About the Virginia State Beekeepers Association
The Virginia State Beekeepers Association (VSBA), founded in 1918, has been dedicated for more than a century to advancing the art and science of beekeeping in the Commonwealth. Our organization was created to unite beekeepers across Virginia, provide educational opportunities, and advocate for the health and preservation of honey bees.
Honey bees were first introduced to Virginia in 1622 at Jamestown, becoming an essential part of agriculture and community life. In recognition of this legacy, the VSBA successfully supported efforts to designate the European honey bee as Virginia’s official State Pollinator in 2024.
Over the years, VSBA has championed initiatives such as:
-
Supporting the growth of local beekeeping associations statewide.
-
Advocating for legislation, including the Beehive Grant and Distribution Program.
-
Celebrating milestones like the 400th anniversary of honey bees in Jamestown.
-
Hosting educational conferences, workshops, and research programs to strengthen beekeeping practices.
Today, VSBA continues to serve as the statewide resource for beekeepers of all experience levels, working to ensure a thriving future for both bees and beekeepers.
